When it comes to most aspects of our spending, we try to cut corners and save a dollar every chance we can. ¹from a consumer’s point of view if we find 2 shops with the same product but one is cheaper then we automatically think we should choose the cheaper product. When it comes to cosmetics however this can be a major mistake. Cosmetics is one of the primary products which are targeted by the knock off market. They are simple enough to fake initially and the price point on them is generally high enough that even if most of their product gets taken by customs, they are still likely to make a large profit on their illegal activity. This is why I prefer to purchase cosmetics from a reputable distributor. Also, the distributors reputation means more to me than their price point in general.
In the worst-case scenario illegitimate products can contain harmful materials. In the best-case scenario, the illegitimate products won’t perform up to your expectations. This is why you need to protect yourself by doing your own research. When you are thinking about purchasing from a new online distributor based on the price point your first step should be to look for reviews. My favorite starting point is all general Makeup Review Blogs. Chances are if other professionals have used these companies to purchase product and they are happy with it then they are in fact legitimate. Recently a well-known independent make up manufacturer posted in his own blog that over a million dollars of his product had been stolen from the manufacturing plant. Although he was able to recover a lot of it still proves the point that cosmetic espionage is a real problem in the industry.
It is nearly impossible to look around on the internet without finding advertisements for companies which sell the products you love at seemingly impossible prices. And my father once told me if it seems too good to be true it probably is not. In fact, most of the major high-end cosmetic companies produce their products in factories outside of the USA. Now this shouldn’t deter you from purchasing their products since 90% of all products in this country are produced outside of the USA. It simply begs the question: who is regulating the production. Most of the time other than internal quality control checks there is little to no regulation on the production. Likewise, there is even less regulation on the packaging. Therefore, there is a large amount of theft of branded packaging supplies. This allows for others to produce knock off versions of the same product while maintaining their branding. Knock off products which appear to be the real deal are then sold to distributors in the United States under the guise of legality. Then subsequently these distributors by all means appear to be selling the legitimate product to consumers like you and me.
